Now I would never say I was a wine expert - a keen partaker of the odd glass here or there - certainly - but not an expert. However, I recently had an experience that I just wanted to share with everyone.
I was randomly driving around the southern reaches of Cornwall, around Penzance, a couple of weeks ago and popped into an interesting looking shop just off the main road - this turned out to be Polgoon Cider Orchard and Vineyard. I ended up buying a couple of bottles of their fine produce and chatting to Kim, who together with her husband John ( and 5!! kids) started this whole crazy adventure, a few years ago.
The reason I say adventure is because Kim invited me back down a few days later to have a tour around the vineyard - where she chatted about the journey her whole family have been on to get to this point.
My Friend Jill and Kim, walking amongst misty vines...
It’s an incredible tale of spontaneous whimsey, positive attitude, really really hard graft, near disasters when the fickle Cornish weather turned ugly for a bit and then ultimately triumph … producing great British wines and ciders, winning national awardsand building a devoted following of passionate wine drinkers… of which I now class myself as one!
So what’s my favourite? - Too tricky to answer - it depends on my mood - here are some picks -
I actually love their Apple Juice- I know - simple, but on a hot day, with a splash of iced water and a bit of mint it tastes as good as the finest cocktails …( ok - nearly!) Oh and the kids love it too!
My favourite wine is the 2014 Bacchus White - it’s really summery - sea food complementing, full of fruit and hints of more delicate, fragrant notes… all I know is that from the very first taste I knew I loved it and so would anyone who tries it…
Actually it would be criminal not to mention the Rondo & Pinot Noir Rose which comes from a lineage that has won ‘best UK Rose’ as well as their delicious line of Sparkling offerings - the Pinot Noir Rose and the Serval Blanc Sparkling - both give the rest of the world ( i.e. champagne etc) a very healthy bit of competition… and then the ‘Aval’ range- which lifts cider to a whole new dimension… really very clever stuff - and delicious…
Anyway… this is all getting me rather thirsty - so here are some pictures of when we met up with Kim - and saw some of the amazing work that goes into making some very special liquid indeed!
Seeing Kim walking around her vines, over the soil where she had dug for days, cursed, cried and rejoiced - watching her gently cradle infant bunches of grapes - willing them to plump fruition… I was struck by her genuine sense of pride, a pride well earned and inspirational, just being there with her made me want to commit even more fully to my own dreams and aspirations … it made me realise the only way to really succeed is to commit fully to anything you are doing … the people you love, the work you are doing and the dreams you have …. that and a great glass of wine… it was a pretty special day!
Hope you like - x
